ISNUMBER()

Returns TRUE if a value is a number; useful for guarding numeric expressions.

Syntax
fx
=ISNUMBER(value)
Arguments
ArgumentDescription
valueThe value to test.
Example
fx
=ISNUMBER(42)

Paste this into Google Sheets to run it. The live playground on this site covers 24 of the 61 functions, and ISNUMBER isn't one of them yet.

Common pitfalls

  • Returns FALSE for numeric strings (e.g. "42"). To accept numeric-looking text, coerce with VALUE() or --A1 first.
  • Booleans coerce to 1/0 for math but ISNUMBER(TRUE) returns FALSE: don't use ISNUMBER to gate boolean inputs.
