MEDIAN()

Returns the median (middle value) of a dataset. Half the values are below, half above.

Syntax
fx
=MEDIAN(value1, [value2, ...])
Arguments
ArgumentDescription
value1The first value or range to consider.
[value2, ...]Additional values or ranges.
Example
fx
=MEDIAN(1, 3, 5, 7, 9)

Paste this into Google Sheets to run it. The live playground on this site covers 24 of the 61 functions, and MEDIAN isn't one of them yet.

Common pitfalls

  • If the range has an even count of numbers, MEDIAN returns the average of the two middle values, which may not exist in the dataset.
  • Skips empty and text cells. Counts numeric zeros, which pull the median down on sparse data.
