NOT()

Returns the opposite of a logical value: NOT(TRUE) = FALSE.

Syntax
fx
=NOT(logical_expression)
Arguments
ArgumentDescription
logical_expressionAn expression or reference holding a logical value to be negated.
Example
fx
=NOT(A1>10)

Paste this into Google Sheets to run it. The live playground on this site covers 24 of the 61 functions, and NOT isn't one of them yet.

Common pitfalls

  • Wraps a single boolean. To negate a row of booleans, use 1- instead (e.g. 1 - (A:A="x")).
  • NOT(ISBLANK(x)) is a common idiom for "x has any value, even an empty string".
